Oval Cut Diamond Engagement Rings

Oval Cut Diamond

History of the Oval Cut Diamond

The oval cut diamond is a fairly new diamond shape, having been introduced in the 60’s by a famous diamond cutter who was credited with creating the modern oval cut diamond which has gained a lot of popularity, this style in diamond cutting was the first to create a perfectly symmetrical oval cut diamond with a brilliant faceted pattern.

Before the oval cut stone, elongated diamonds used to be cut in a rectangular shape, known as the “marquise cut” still a popular shape today or the “navette cut” not so popular now. While these cuts were the rage back then, they were not as symmetrical as the oval cut and did not offer the same level of fire and brilliance and scintillation.

The oval cut became highly desirable for its unique elongated shape and ability to make a diamond appear larger than it actually is. It also offered a more modern and updated look on the round brilliant cut and people wanted something different and unique.

Below is a modern Oval Cut Diamond Engagement ring that we made recently featuring a central Lab Grown diamond with interval set diamonds on the shoulders.

Why Are Oval Cut Diamond Engagement Rings So Popular?

Oval cut diamond engagement rings are a popular diamond shape used in engagement rings. They have an elongated oval shape with a similar number of facets to the round shape, which gives them excellent light performance, fire & brilliance .

Its a classic looking stone however caution needs to be observed when choosing an Oval cut diamond. This diamond will not have a cut grade on your GIA report so its a great idea see it or an image of the diamond before you buy as it can be the difference between getting a poor stone or a beautiful one.

One of the advantages of oval cut diamond engagement rings is that they can make the finger of the wearer appear longer and more slender, which is one of the reasons our customers decide to choose this shape. The elongated shape also makes the diamond look larger than a round diamond of the same carat weight, which can make it an attractive option for those who want a larger looking diamond without paying for a higher carat weight. This is known as the spread of the stone.

When selecting an oval cut diamond, it is important to pay attention to the diamond’s colour, clarity, and carat weight.  The colour and clarity are factors that affect the diamond’s overall appearance. The carat weight, determines the weight of the diamond. Because the cut determines how well the diamond reflects light and how it performance optically its important to get advice on visible bow tie in this sort of diamond shape, which is essentially light leaking through the back of the diamond. Its length to width ratio which determines its overall shape and other factors which effect the cut.

As mentioned the Cut grade is not available on a GIA report although we have heard that IGI another diamond laboratory are starting to introduce cut grades for fancy shaped stones.

It’s also important to consider the setting of the diamond in the engagement ring. Oval cut diamonds can look stunning in a variety of settings, including solitaire, halo, three-stone oval settings, or with side accents. The choice of setting will depend on the personal style and preferences of the wearer. There are many celebrity oval cut engagement rings which has increased the shapes popularity of course!
