About This Design

Gold pear shaped engagement rings are one of the most striking combinations in jewellery, and the Vulcana takes that pairing somewhere entirely unexpected. The name comes from the Latin for “of the volcano,” and it describes the design concept perfectly. The entire band is sculpted to mimic the organic, unpredictable flow of molten lava, with a texture that looks as though the gold cooled and solidified around the diamond naturally. It is unlike anything you will find in a conventional jewellery store, and that is exactly the point.

This ring was born from a real commission. Gus came to us from London with a clear vision. He wanted a unique engagement ring for his partner Thea, something that felt completely personal and broke away from tradition without losing any of the impact. We explored different directions together, from engraving to abstract forms, before arriving at the idea of volcanic lava as the foundation for the design. The result is a ring where the gold appears to have erupted and flowed into shape, holding a 2.5ct pear shaped lab-grown diamond in a full bezel setting that follows the organic contours of the band.

What makes the Vulcana possible is the use of 3D sculpting software from the film industry rather than standard jewellery CAD. Traditional design tools work with geometric shapes and precise measurements, which is perfect for conventional rings but cannot produce the kind of freeform, natural texture that defines this piece. Sculpting software allows forms to be shaped the way a sculptor works with clay, building up surfaces and textures that feel genuinely organic rather than manufactured.

Design Details

The lava texture runs across the entire surface of the band, from the base through to the bezel that holds the diamond. The surface is irregular, with subtle pitting and raised ridges that replicate the way cooled volcanic rock looks and feels. No two areas of the band are identical, which gives the ring a quality that machine-made jewellery simply cannot achieve.

The pear shaped diamond sits in a full bezel setting, with the gold wrapping around the edge of the stone in the same organic, flowing style as the rest of the band. The bezel is not smooth or uniform. It follows the lava texture, making the transition between metal and diamond feel seamless, as though the stone is emerging from the surface rather than being placed on top of it. This setting also protects the pointed end of the pear shape, which is the most vulnerable part of the diamond.

The band widens as it rises towards the diamond, creating a tapered profile that gives the ring a bold, sculptural presence on the finger without adding unnecessary bulk to the underside. The proportions are designed so the ring remains comfortable for everyday wear despite its statement character.

Gus and Thea’s Story

The connection that led to this ring started with a conversation Gus had with Thea’s mum when asking for her blessing. She told him she knew someone who could help, a jeweller named Mrs Day who had taught our children at primary school. Mrs Day got in touch to see if we could create something special, and shortly after, Gus contacted us directly.

From the first conversation it was clear that Gus wanted something with real personality. He and Thea are not conventional people, and he wanted the ring to reflect that. We worked through several ideas together before landing on the volcanic concept, and from there the design came together quickly. Gus chose a 2.52ct E colour VS1 lab-grown pear diamond, certified to the highest standards, giving the ring serious presence without compromising on quality. The moment Thea said yes made every detail worth getting right.

Your Diamond

The Vulcana is available with both lab-grown and natural pear shaped diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. They are graded to the same standards and certified by the same independent laboratories including GIA and IGI. The difference is origin, not quality. Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled conditions that replicate the natural process, resulting in a stone with the same brilliance, fire, and durability at a lower price point. Natural diamonds carry the rarity and geological story that some people value deeply. Both are excellent choices, and it comes down to what matters most to you.

We source every diamond individually to match your preferred size, colour, and clarity. Pear shaped diamonds vary in their proportions, with some appearing longer and more slender while others have a wider, more rounded body. The length-to-width ratio makes a significant difference to how the stone looks on the hand, and we guide you through that decision during the consultation.

How It Works

Every Si Vis Amari ring begins with a conversation. The Vulcana is a bespoke design, which means the lava texture, the proportions, and the diamond are all tailored to you. You can visit us at our Didsbury or Manchester city centre studio by appointment, or arrange a virtual consultation if you prefer. This ring is shown in 18ct yellow gold, but it is also available in platinum, 18ct white gold, and 18ct rose gold. The texture can be adapted too, whether you want a more dramatic surface or something subtler.

Crafted by Hand

Every Si Vis Amari ring is handcrafted individually and hallmarked by the Birmingham Assay Office in accordance with UK law. The Vulcana is made specifically for you by experienced craftspeople who understand that every piece tells a story. From the initial consultation through to the finished ring, every step reflects a commitment to getting the details right.

What is a bespoke engagement ring?

A bespoke engagement ring is designed and made from scratch to your specification. Unlike choosing from a pre-made catalogue, every element of the ring is considered individually, from the diamond and the metal to the texture, proportions, and setting style. At Si Vis Amari, the bespoke process starts with a consultation where we discuss your ideas, source your diamond, and develop the design together. The result is a ring that is completely yours and cannot be found anywhere else.

Can I have the Vulcana made with a natural diamond instead of lab-grown?

Yes. The Vulcana can be set with either a lab-grown or natural pear shaped diamond. Both are graded and certified to the same standards by independent laboratories such as GIA and IGI. Lab-grown diamonds offer the same optical and physical properties at a lower price, while natural diamonds carry geological rarity. We source both and can guide you through the differences during your consultation.

How is the lava texture on the ring created?

The lava texture is designed using 3D sculpting software from the film industry, not standard jewellery CAD. This software allows organic, freeform shapes to be created in a way that conventional design tools cannot replicate. The texture is built into the digital model and then cast in gold, preserving every detail of the sculpted surface. Because it is digitally designed, the texture can be adapted for each commission to be more or less pronounced depending on your preference.

Is the Vulcana only available as a pear shaped engagement ring?

The Vulcana was originally designed around a pear shaped diamond, and the tapered bezel follows the contour of that shape naturally. However, the volcanic lava concept can be adapted to work with other diamond shapes including oval, round, and marquise. Get in touch to discuss how the design could work with a different stone, or explore our wider engagement ring collection for other options.

How much does a bespoke engagement ring cost?

Bespoke engagement rings are priced on application as the cost depends on the diamond specification, the complexity of the design, and the metal. Every commission is different, and we provide a detailed quote once we understand what you are looking for. Contact us for a no-obligation conversation about your ideas and budget.

Carat weights shown are approximate. Your diamond will be within the stated range (e.g. a 0.75ct selection may be 0.73–0.78ct). Exact weight and specification confirmed at time of order.
