About This Design

Elongated cushion cut engagement rings have a softness that other diamond shapes cannot quite match, and the Monolithus is built around that quality. The name means “single stone,” and that is exactly the intention. Everything about this design exists to frame one diamond and nothing else. A split shank rises from the base of the band, two gold strands merging into a single form that wraps around the stone in a semi rub-over setting, holding it securely while leaving its upper facets fully exposed to light.

The elongated cushion cut sits horizontally across the finger, giving the ring a distinctive, contemporary feel that sets it apart from more conventional solitaire engagement rings. The proportions are deliberate. An elongated cushion has a longer length-to-width ratio than a standard cushion cut diamond, creating a shape that covers more of the finger without adding height. It is worth knowing that not all elongated cushion cuts look the same. Some have softer, more rounded corners that lean towards a pillow-like appearance, while others carry a slightly more rectangular outline. The variation is part of what makes this shape such a personal choice, and we work with you to source a stone with the exact proportions you prefer.

What makes the Monolithus unusual, even among bespoke designs, is the sandblast finish on the gold. Rather than the mirror polish you see on almost every engagement ring, this band has a fine, matte texture that gives the metal a warm, understated character. It softens the gold and creates a tactile quality that feels grounded and organic. Combined with the sculptural split shank, the overall effect is a ring that feels like it was shaped rather than assembled.

Design Details

The split shank begins low on the band as two separate strands that gradually converge as they approach the diamond. Where they meet, they form the structure that holds the stone, creating a semi rub-over setting that wraps around the edges of the cushion cut diamond while leaving the table and crown fully visible. This setting style protects the corners of the diamond, which is particularly useful for cushion cuts where the softer edges benefit from that coverage.

The band profile is organic rather than geometric. This ring is designed using 3D sculpting software from the film industry rather than standard jewellery CAD, which is what allows the forms to flow into each other with a fluidity that conventional design tools simply cannot produce. Every curve and transition has been considered to feel natural, as though the metal grew around the stone.

The sandblast finish is applied after the ring is cast and shaped. It creates a consistent, fine-grained matte texture across the entire surface of the gold. This finish can be reapplied during routine servicing if desired, though many people find that the slight patina it develops over time adds to the character of the ring.

Your Diamond

The Monolithus is available with both lab-grown and natural elongated cushion cut diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds. They are graded to the same standards and certified by the same independent laboratories. The difference is origin, not quality. Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled conditions that replicate the natural process, resulting in a stone with the same brilliance, fire, and durability at a lower price point. Natural diamonds carry the rarity and geological story that some people value deeply. Both are excellent choices, and neither is better than the other. It comes down to what matters most to you.

We source every diamond individually to match your preferred size, colour, and clarity. Because elongated cushion cuts vary so much in their proportions, we never commit to a stone until you have reviewed it and confirmed you are happy with the shape. A cushion that leans slightly more rectangular will look and feel quite different to one with softer, rounder edges, and that is exactly the kind of detail we get right during the consultation.

How It Works

Every Si Vis Amari ring begins with a conversation. You can visit us at our Didsbury or Manchester city centre studio by appointment, or arrange a virtual consultation if you prefer. We will talk through what you are looking for, source your diamond, and guide you through every decision from carat weight to metal choice. The Monolithus is shown here in 18ct yellow gold with a sandblast finish, but it is also available in platinum, 18ct white gold, and 18ct rose gold. The finish can be adapted too, whether you want to keep the sandblast texture or opt for a traditional polish.

Crafted by Hand

Every Si Vis Amari ring is handcrafted individually and hallmarked by the Birmingham Assay Office in accordance with UK law. The Monolithus is made specifically for you by experienced craftspeople who understand that every piece tells a story. From the initial consultation through to the finished ring, every step reflects a commitment to getting the details right.

What is an elongated cushion cut diamond?

An elongated cushion cut diamond has a rectangular outline with softly rounded corners, giving it the look of a stretched pillow. It differs from a standard cushion cut by having a longer length-to-width ratio, typically around 1.15 to 1.30. This elongated proportion covers more of the finger and creates a flattering, contemporary appearance. The exact shape varies from stone to stone, with some leaning more rectangular and others retaining a softer, rounder outline. It is very much a personal choice.

What is the difference between a lab-grown and natural cushion cut diamond?

Lab-grown and natural cushion cut diamonds are identical in every measurable way. They have the same chemical composition, the same hardness, the same optical properties, and the same brilliance. Both are graded by independent laboratories such as GIA and IGI using the same criteria. The only difference is how they were formed. Natural diamonds developed deep within the earth over millions of years, while lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled environments that replicate the same conditions. Lab-grown diamonds offer the same beauty at a lower price, while natural diamonds carry geological rarity. Neither is inherently better. It depends on what is important to you.

Can the Monolithus be made with a different diamond shape?

The Monolithus is designed specifically around the elongated cushion cut, and the proportions of the split shank and semi rub-over setting are tailored to that shape. If you love the design concept but want to explore a different diamond shape, get in touch and we can discuss how the design might be adapted. We also have a wide range of other engagement ring designs suited to different shapes.

Does the sandblast finish wear off over time?

A sandblast finish will gradually develop a softer patina through everyday wear, which many people find adds character to the ring. The texture does not disappear entirely, but it will become smoother in areas of frequent contact over the years. The finish can be refreshed during routine servicing if you prefer to maintain the original matte appearance. This is a straightforward process and is part of the aftercare we offer.

Will this ring sit flush against a wedding ring?

Yes. The Monolithus is designed to be wedding ring compatible. The setting height and band profile are considered from the outset so the ring sits comfortably against a straight wedding band without any gap.

Carat weights shown are approximate. Your diamond will be within the stated range (e.g. a 0.75ct selection may be 0.73–0.78ct). Exact weight and specification confirmed at time of order.
