About This Design

A marquise trilogy ring pairs one of the most dramatic diamond shapes with the symbolism of three stones representing past, present, and future. The Voluta, named after the Latin for scroll, takes that combination and adds a level of hidden detail that most trilogy engagement rings never attempt. Turn the ring to the side and the gallery reveals decorative scrollwork flowing beneath each stone, a detail invisible from above but unmistakable in person.

The marquise centre stone is flanked by two pear-shaped diamonds, their tapered points echoing the elongated form of the marquise. The three stones sit close together with their outlines following a continuous curve, creating a silhouette that lengthens the finger dramatically. From above, the Voluta reads as a bold, confident three stone marquise ring. From the side, the scrollwork transforms it into something far more considered.

Every element of this ring was designed to work in harmony. The tapered court shank narrows toward the gallery, drawing the eye upward to the stones. The scrollwork beneath was designed in CAD with careful attention to the flow between each opening, ensuring the pattern reads as a single continuous motif rather than a series of separate cutouts. It is a trilogy engagement ring built on the principle that the details you cannot see at first glance are the ones that matter most.

Design Details

The marquise centre diamond is secured by six round claws, with a claw positioned at each of the two pointed ends to protect the most vulnerable parts of the stone. The two pear side stones are each held by three round claws, with a single claw at the point of each pear for the same protective purpose. Round claws were chosen over V-tip claws to keep the overall aesthetic soft and flowing, consistent with the organic scrollwork beneath.

The band is a slight court profile, comfortable for everyday wear, with a tapered shank that narrows as it approaches the gallery. This taper gives the ring a sense of lightness and directs attention to the three stones and the decorative bridge beneath them. The scrollwork gallery features a series of teardrop-shaped openings that mirror the curves of the pear side stones, creating a visual continuity between the upper and lower halves of the ring that is entirely deliberate.

The gallery scrollwork was designed in CAD and cast as part of the ring structure. Significant time went into refining the proportions and spacing of each opening to achieve a harmonious flow, the kind of detail that separates considered design from decoration for its own sake. The result is a marquise 3 stone engagement ring with a gallery profile as carefully composed as the stone arrangement above it.

Diamond Selection

The Voluta is available with both lab-grown and natural diamonds. Every centre stone is independently certified by the GIA or IGI, confirming its carat weight, colour, clarity, and cut grade. The pear side stones are matched to the centre diamond for colour and clarity to ensure a consistent appearance across all three stones.

Our lab-grown diamonds are graded to D or E colour with VS1 to VVS1 clarity. For natural diamonds, we source stones individually to your specification. Marquise diamonds require particular care in selection, the elongated shape makes colour tinting and bow-tie effects more visible than in rounder cuts. We assess every marquise for these characteristics before recommending it. Use the configurator above to select your preferred carat weight, or get in touch for a natural diamond quote.

Your Diamond Shape

The Voluta is designed exclusively for a marquise centre diamond with pear-shaped side stones. The entire ring, from the claw arrangement to the gallery scrollwork to the tapered shank, was engineered around the proportions and geometry of these three stone shapes working together. The elongated outline of the marquise combined with the pointed pear flanks creates a silhouette that no other stone combination can achieve.

If you are drawn to the trilogy concept but prefer a different centre stone shape, explore our trilogy collection for alternative options, or contact us to discuss a bespoke adaptation.

Metals

The Voluta is available in platinum, 18ct yellow gold, 18ct white gold, and 18ct rose gold. Platinum is the natural pairing for a three stone marquise diamond ring, its bright white tone allows the diamonds to take centre stage and the scrollwork gallery casts clean shadows within its openings. White gold achieves a similar look at a lower price point but will need periodic rhodium plating. Yellow and rose gold bring warmth to the design and give the gallery scrollwork a richer, more antique character. All metals are hallmarked by the Birmingham Assay Office in accordance with UK law.

Wedding Ring Compatibility

Trilogy rings with pointed stone shapes can present challenges for wedding ring pairing, particularly if the side stones extend beyond the band width or the setting sits too high. The Voluta was designed with this in mind. The pear side stones are positioned so their widest points sit within the band profile, and the setting height is calibrated to allow a straight wedding band to sit flush. You are not forced into a shaped or contoured wedding ring unless you prefer one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the scrollwork on the Voluta?

The scrollwork is a series of decorative openings in the gallery, the bridge of metal beneath the three stones. These teardrop-shaped cutouts mirror the curves of the pear side stones and create a flowing pattern visible from the side and back of the ring. The scrollwork was designed in CAD with careful attention to proportion and spacing, then cast as part of the ring structure. It adds a layer of hidden detail that distinguishes the Voluta from standard trilogy engagement rings.

Why a marquise centre with pear side stones?

The marquise and pear shapes share a pointed geometry that allows them to sit together in a continuous flowing outline. The tapered ends of the pears follow the direction of the marquise points, creating a silhouette that elongates the finger more dramatically than any other trilogy combination. It is a pairing rooted in geometric logic as much as aesthetics.

How do you select the side stones?

The two pear side stones are matched to the centre marquise diamond for colour and clarity, ensuring all three stones look consistent. We also match the proportions, selecting pears whose length and width complement the specific marquise you choose rather than using standard-sized side stones. Every Voluta is built around its individual set of three diamonds.

Is the marquise diamond shape prone to damage at the points?

Marquise diamonds have pointed ends that are more vulnerable than the edges of rounder shapes. The Voluta addresses this with six claws including dedicated claws at both points of the marquise, and single point claws on each pear side stone. These protect the most exposed areas of the diamonds during everyday wear. With proper claw maintenance, a marquise engagement ring is perfectly durable for daily use.

Carat weights shown are approximate. Your diamond will be within the stated range (e.g. a 0.75ct selection may be 0.73–0.78ct). Exact weight and specification confirmed at time of order.
