About This Design
Yellow diamond engagement rings hold a warmth that white diamonds simply cannot match, and the Canaria captures that warmth with a stone that took months to find. The name comes from the Latin for songbird, a nod to the rich canary colour of the cape yellow diamond at its centre. This ring was originally designed for Emily, who had always been drawn to the soft golden tone of natural cape diamonds, and the result is a design that balances vintage character with clean, modern lines.
The centre stone is a 1.15 carat natural GIA certified diamond in the W/X colour range. Cape diamonds sit in a particular sweet spot. The colour is a genuine, settled yellow with no grey or brown undertones. It is not the vivid intensity of a fancy yellow, but something more delicate and natural. Finding that balance is difficult. Many stones in this range carry an unwanted tinge that shifts the tone away from a true warm yellow, but this stone reads exactly as it should.
From above, the diamond layout creates a streamlined shape that draws the eye along its length. Two round brilliant accent diamonds sit either side of the centre stone, with a single pear diamond terminating the design and giving the overall composition a gentle, elongated form. The total accent weight is 0.20 carats in F colour VS clarity, all natural, providing a crisp white contrast against the warm cape yellow centre.
Design Details
The Canaria is set in 18ct yellow gold, which was chosen deliberately to complement and enhance the cape yellow colour of the centre stone. Yellow gold amplifies the warmth of a cape diamond in a way that white metals cannot. The stone is held by six talon claws, giving secure coverage around the marquise shape whilst allowing maximum light to enter from all angles.
The band measures 1.8mm wide and tapers gently as it approaches the basket, keeping the overall profile delicate without sacrificing structural integrity. This is a ring built for daily wear. The tapering creates an elegant transition from band to setting, and the proportions have been carefully considered so that the ring feels substantial on the finger without being heavy.
The accent stones are set low and close to the centre diamond, creating a continuous visual flow rather than isolated clusters of stones. The two rounds sit closest to the centre, with the pear diamond extending outward at the tip. This arrangement gives the Canaria its distinctive streamlined silhouette when viewed from above.
A straight wedding ring will sit flush against the Canaria with no gap, making it practical as well as beautiful.
Your Diamond
The featured Canaria carries a 1.15 carat natural cape yellow diamond, GIA certified at W/X colour with VS2 clarity. Cape diamonds are natural diamonds that fall in the warmer end of the GIA colour scale. Unlike fancy yellow diamonds which are graded on a separate scale, cape diamonds are graded on the standard D to Z range. The W/X grade sits in the territory where the yellow is clearly visible and intentional rather than a flaw.
What sets a good cape diamond apart from an ordinary warm-toned stone is consistency of colour and the absence of secondary tones. A poorly selected stone in this range may carry grey, green, or brown undertones that muddy the yellow. This stone carries none of those. The colour is a clean, settled warm yellow throughout, which is exactly what makes cape diamonds so sought after by collectors and those who appreciate something different.
The Canaria design works beautifully with cape yellow diamonds in a range of carat weights. If you are looking for a yellow diamond engagement ring with a different stone size or specification, we source each diamond individually to match your requirements. Get in touch to discuss options.
Commission a Canaria
The Canaria is available to order as shown or adapted to your preferences. We can source cape yellow diamonds in a range of carat weights and adjust the accent stone configuration to suit. Every commission begins with a consultation at our Didsbury studio or Manchester city centre studio, where we discuss the stone, the design, and the story behind it.
If you have a specific cape yellow or fancy yellow diamond in mind, we can work with stones you have sourced yourself or find the right diamond through our network of trusted suppliers. Natural cape diamonds are becoming increasingly rare in good colour saturation, so lead times for sourcing may vary.
Crafted by Hand
Every Si Vis Amari ring is handcrafted individually and hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay Office in accordance with UK law. The Canaria is made specifically for you by experienced craftspeople who understand that every piece tells a story.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a cape yellow diamond?
A cape yellow diamond is a natural diamond that falls in the W to Z range on the GIA colour scale. Unlike fancy yellow diamonds which are graded separately, cape diamonds display a warm, subtle yellow tone that is intentional and desirable rather than a deficiency. The best cape diamonds carry a clean yellow with no grey or brown undertones. They are increasingly rare in good colour quality.
Why choose 18ct yellow gold for a yellow diamond engagement ring?
Yellow gold enhances the natural warmth of a cape yellow diamond. White metals like platinum or white gold create contrast that can make the yellow appear less intentional. Setting a cape diamond in 18ct yellow gold allows the colour to read as rich and deliberate, which is why we chose it for the Canaria and recommend it for most yellow diamond engagement rings.
Can the Canaria be made with a different carat weight?
Yes. The featured Canaria carries a 1.15 carat GIA certified cape yellow diamond, but we can source natural cape yellow diamonds in a range of sizes. Each stone is selected individually for colour quality and consistency. Book a consultation to discuss your preferred carat weight and budget.
Will a wedding ring sit flush against the Canaria?
Yes. The Canaria has been designed so that a straight wedding ring sits flush with no gap. If you prefer a shaped or diamond-set wedding band, we can advise on the best options during your consultation. Browse our wedding ring collection for ideas.
