Where It All Began

My love affair with gemstones started in the most unlikely of places , the Christian Quarter of old Aleppo, in the shadow of the ancient citadel. As a child, my mother would take me to visit her jeweller, weaving through narrow streets alive with the hustle and bustle of diamond and gemstone shops. I remember being completely mesmerised by the green of the emeralds, the fire in the diamonds, the way light played through every stone. Something stirred in me that never went away.

Born in Edinburgh, I moved to Syria at the age of seven. Those formative years in Aleppo planted a seed that would shape everything that followed. Back in the UK, growing up in Cheadle and then Wilmslow, my childhood was filled with the things that fed my imagination, no phones, no internet, just a ZX Spectrum, Grange Hill, and an almost religious devotion to The Goonies. I must have watched it every single day after school. The adventure, the treasure, the pirate ship,  it was pure magic. And if I’m being completely honest, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs has a lot to answer for too. That scene where they’re mining for gemstones before heading back to the cottage? Those perfect, gleaming Walt Disney gems captivated me long before I knew what a carat was.

After a spell in Dubai during my teenage years, I returned to Wilmslow to study A-levels. But the pull of gemstones and design never left. It was always there, quietly shaping the direction my life would take.

A Mission to Change the Industry

When I began to explore the jewellery industry seriously, I was struck by how secretive it was. Diamond knowledge was treated as privileged information, hoarded by the trade and kept firmly away from the people actually spending their money. Nobody talked about length-to-width ratios, or how an abnormal tinge can affect a diamond’s appearance, or what a bowtie really means in an oval or marquise. The differences in clarity grading within the same category, the fact that not all VS1 diamonds are equal, that you can have a strong one or a weak one sitting right on the border of the next grade,  none of this was shared with customers. The same applied to colour: a good G colour and a weak G bordering on H are very different stones, but nobody wanted that conversation.

Shops avoided selling GIA-certified diamonds because independent certification exposed the reality of what they were offering. It was cloak and dagger, and I thought it was wrong.

So I took a different approach. I started sharing everything I knew, openly, publicly, and in detail. Diamond shapes, spread, proportions, the nuances of grading, how to actually compare stones and understand what you’re buying. The goal was simple: give people the knowledge to make an informed choice, so they could find the most beautiful diamond for their budget and feel confident in that decision.

It ruffled feathers. Quite a few companies were unhappy about it. But gradually, they started to follow suit. The information that had been locked away began to appear elsewhere. That felt like progress. At the time, there was very little diamond education available online, and in shops, the conversation rarely went beyond the basics. I believed, and still believe, that transparency is the foundation of trust. If you’re asking someone to invest in a diamond engagement ring, they deserve to understand exactly what they’re getting.

Si Vis Amari – If You Wish to Be Loved

Si Vis Amari, Ama. It’s Latin, and it translates simply: if you wish to be loved, love.

When I founded Si Vis Amari in 2010, I wanted a name that could be hallmarked, that carried personal meaning, and that spoke to something bigger than jewellery. The philosophy behind the business has always been about more than the bottom line. It’s about making genuine connections, caring about people, being kind, and doing the best job you can. If you love your customers, you’ll be loved in return. That’s really all you need.

The truth is, you don’t need a diamond engagement ring. You just want one. And really, if you wish to be loved, just love. But if you do want a ring, if you want something beautiful, meaningful, and made with real care,  then I’m right here, ready to help.

That ethos runs through everything we do as independent Jewellers. Every consultation starts with your story, not a sales pitch. Every design is shaped by who you are and what matters to you, not by what’s sitting in a display case. We don’t do walk-ins or hard sells. We take the time to listen, to understand, and to create something that genuinely reflects your relationship.

Didsbury –  Where We Call Home

I first discovered Didsbury as a young bachelor looking for my first home. I drove down Parkfield Road South and fell in love with it immediately, the tree-lined streets, the village atmosphere, the sense of community. I got my first apartment and never looked back.

Didsbury has been home ever since, and it was the natural choice for our flagship independent jewellery studio. Based in the heart of Didsbury Village, our studio reflects the same warmth and personal touch that defines the area itself. There’s no shop front, no display cabinets, no pressure. Just a relaxed, private setting where we can sit down together and talk about what you’re looking for.

Our second studio is in Manchester city centre, offering the same consultative experience for those who prefer a central location. Both studios are strictly by appointment, because creating something bespoke deserves time, attention, and a proper conversation.

Bespoke Engagement Rings, Designed From Your Story

Every engagement ring we create is designed from a your relationship journey, where you first met, your interests, a place, a family heirloom. We don’t stock pre-made rings or work from mass-produced templates. Each piece begins with a conversation, about your partner, your style, your story, and from there, we design something entirely unique to you.

Our rings are handcrafted in the UK using the finest lab-grown and natural diamonds, ethically sourced coloured gemstones, and precious metals. Whether you’re drawn to a classic solitaire, a hidden halo, or something completely bespoke, we work closely with you through every step of the process, from initial sketches and 3D modelling to the finished piece in your hands.

As a lover of travel, the arts, and design, I draw inspiration from the world around me. Our upcoming Kalimera range was born on a trip to Greece, watching jasmine vines crawling up sun-bleached walls and winding through the bushes, that organic, flowing movement found its way into the design. Italy, Spain, Switzerland,  each journey leaves its mark. Every ring in our collection has a story behind it,  a moment, a place, an idea that shaped its design. That’s the difference between something bespoke and something bought off a shelf. Meaning.

Quality, Transparency, and Trust

Si Vis Amari is a proud member of the National Association of Jewellers (NAJ), the UK’s leading trade body for the jewellery industry. Our diamonds are independently certified by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute), ensuring every stone meets the highest standards of grading and quality.

We run a UK-based workshops. We believe in British manufacturing and maintaining the quality control that bespoke jewellery demands. From the initial consultation to the moment you collect your finished ring, every detail is handled with care.
