Engraved Wedding Rings

Carved By Hand

Engraved wedding rings carry something that a plain band never will. A pattern, a message, a symbol that means something only to you. We offer three distinct methods of engraving, each with its own character, and each one done properly by people who understand the craft. Whether you want traditional hand engraving inspired by a pattern you have seen on your travels, a laser engraved fingerprint of your child, or a family crest carved into a signet ring using techniques that have barely changed since antiquity, we can make it happen.

Every engraved wedding ring we make is crafted in platinum or 18ct gold and hallmarked in the UK. This is not a stamped pattern from a catalogue. It is your design, your story, cut into precious metal by hand or by laser to a standard we are proud to put our name to.

Hand Engraving

Hand engraving is the oldest and most respected form of decorative metalwork in jewellery. Using a tool called a graver or burin, a skilled engraver carves directly into the surface of the metal by hand, removing material to create a design with genuine depth and dimension. The result has a three-dimensional quality that no other method can replicate. Light catches the carved surfaces differently depending on the angle, giving the ring a living quality that changes as it moves.

This is the method we use for decorative patterns on the outside of wedding rings. Scrollwork, florals, wheat patterns, Celtic knotwork, milgrain borders, Art Deco geometric lines. If you have seen a pattern on a vintage ring, a piece of architecture, a textile, or an item of furniture that you love, we can translate it onto a wedding band.

The possibilities are genuinely open. We have engraved patterns inspired by the arabesque motifs of Middle Eastern architecture, the ironwork balconies of European cities, the Flower of Scotland thistle, and the geometric patterns found on Art Deco buildings in Manchester. Some clients bring in a grandparent’s wedding ring and ask us to reproduce the pattern on a new band. Others find inspiration on holiday, in a museum, or on a piece of clothing. Nothing is off limits as long as it can be physically carved into metal.

Hand engraving works best on precious metals. Gold and platinum are soft enough to accept the graver cleanly, and the high purity of 18ct gold and 950 platinum means the metal responds beautifully to the tool. The result is a finish that improves with age as the ring develops its own patina.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving uses a computer-controlled laser to etch designs into the metal surface. The design starts as a digital file, either something we create in CAD or something you provide, and the laser reproduces it with exceptional precision.

This is the method for designs that would be impossible or impractical to carve by hand. A child’s handprint. A pet’s paw print. A fingerprint. A piece of handwriting. A portrait. A sound wave of a voice recording. A heartbeat trace. A skyline. Any image that can be captured digitally can be engraved onto a wedding ring.

Laser engraving also works on narrower bands where hand engraving would struggle, and it can engrave harder metals that resist traditional tools. The finish is flatter and more uniform than hand engraving, which suits modern, clean designs. For text on the inside of a ring, dates, messages, coordinates, song lyrics, laser engraving gives the crispest, most legible result.

We design every laser engraved piece in-house. You bring us the idea or the image, we prepare the artwork, and you approve it before we engrave. There are no preset templates.

Seal Engraving and Signet Rings

Seal engraving is an entirely different discipline. It is one of the oldest art forms in jewellery, tracing back over five thousand years to ancient Mesopotamia where carved seals were pressed into clay to authenticate documents and mark ownership. The Romans refined the technique using drills and wheels to carve detailed portraits and symbols into hardstones like carnelian, onyx, bloodstone, and lapis lazuli. These carved stones, known as intaglios, were set into rings and used as personal signatures throughout the ancient world.

The technique is called intaglio because the design is carved in reverse, recessed into the surface of the metal or stone, so that when pressed into sealing wax it leaves a raised, correctly oriented impression. Even today, a properly made signet ring can seal a letter or document exactly as it would have two thousand years ago.

We make signet rings with seal engraving in 18ct gold and platinum. Family crests, coats of arms, monograms, personal emblems, and custom designs can all be carved in the traditional intaglio method. This is a highly specialised skill and there are very few people left who can do it properly. We work with engravers who use traditional hand tools and techniques passed down through generations.

Inside Engraving

Most of our wedding rings include the option for a personal message engraved on the inside of the band. A date, a name, a short phrase, coordinates, or a simple symbol. Inside engravings are done by laser for the cleanest possible finish on a curved interior surface.

This is often the most personal part of the ring. Nobody sees it except the person wearing it. We have engraved everything from wedding dates and initials to private jokes, song lyrics, and messages in other languages and scripts.

Combining Engraving with Other Elements

Engraving does not have to stand alone. Some of the most beautiful wedding rings we have made combine hand engraved patterns with diamond set shoulders, milgrain edges, or contrasting metal finishes. A hand engraved band in 18ct rose gold with a milgrain border, for example, has a warmth and character that is impossible to achieve any other way.

We can also combine laser and hand engraving on the same ring. A hand engraved decorative pattern on the outside with a laser engraved personal message on the inside is one of the most popular combinations.

Metals

All engraved wedding rings are available in platinum, 18ct yellow gold, 18ct white gold, and 18ct rose gold. Every ring is hallmarked by the Birmingham Assay Office in accordance with UK law.

Our 18ct white gold uses a high palladium alloy that holds its silver-white colour naturally without rhodium plating. For engraved rings, this matters. Rhodium plating sits on the surface and gradually wears, filling in the fine detail of engraving and dulling the three-dimensional effect. Our white gold does not have this problem. The engraving stays crisp for the life of the ring.

Rose gold is particularly popular for hand engraved wedding rings. The warm copper tones complement traditional patterns beautifully and the contrast between the polished surface and the carved detail is striking.

Designed at Our Manchester Studios

Every engraved wedding ring starts with a consultation at one of our two studios, in Didsbury Village or Manchester city centre, both by appointment. We sit down together, look at reference images, discuss the design, and work out the best approach for what you want to achieve.

If you already have a clear idea, bring reference images, sketches, or even the object that inspired you. If you are starting from scratch, we will help you develop the design from the ground up.

Browse our plain wedding rings to choose your band profile and width, then we can discuss adding engraving to any design. Or explore our diamond wedding rings if you want to combine engraving with diamond set detail.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between hand engraving and laser engraving?

Hand engraving uses a traditional tool called a graver to carve directly into the metal by hand. It creates a three-dimensional effect with depth and light play that laser cannot replicate. Laser engraving uses a computer-controlled laser to etch designs from a digital file. It is more precise for fine detail, text, and photographic images like fingerprints or handwriting. Both methods have their strengths and we use whichever is best suited to the design.

Can you engrave any pattern on a wedding ring?

Yes. We have engraved patterns inspired by vintage jewellery, architectural details, textiles, family heirlooms, cultural motifs, and completely original designs. If you can describe it or show us a reference image, we can work with you to translate it onto a ring. Hand engraving is best for decorative patterns and scrollwork. Laser engraving is best for photographic images, handwriting, and very fine detail.

What is a signet ring and how is seal engraving different?

A signet ring carries a design carved in reverse (intaglio) so that it leaves a correctly oriented impression when pressed into sealing wax. Seal engraving is a highly specialised skill that dates back over five thousand years. The design is recessed into the metal or a set hardstone like carnelian or onyx. It is a completely different technique to decorative hand engraving and requires a different set of tools and expertise.

Can you engrave a fingerprint or handprint on a wedding ring?

Yes. We use laser engraving to reproduce fingerprints, handprints, paw prints, and other personal impressions. You provide the print (we can guide you on the best way to capture it) and we prepare the digital artwork for your approval before engraving.

Can I have engraving on the inside of my wedding ring?

Yes. Inside engraving is done by laser for the cleanest result on a curved surface. Most clients choose a date, initials, a short message, or coordinates. There is a character limit depending on the ring width and finger size, which we confirm during your consultation.

How much does an engraved wedding ring cost?

The cost depends on the engraving method, the complexity of the design, the metal, and the ring width. Hand engraving is more labour intensive and costs more than laser engraving. Seal engraving for signet rings is a specialist craft and priced accordingly. We provide detailed quotes after discussing your design so there are no surprises. Get in touch to start the conversation.

Will engraving wear off over time?

Hand engraving removes metal to create the design, so it is permanent. The depth of the carving means it will last the lifetime of the ring and typically improves with age as the ring develops a natural patina. Laser engraving is also extremely durable and wear resistant. Both methods are designed to last as long as the ring itself.

Can you combine engraving with diamonds on a wedding ring?

Yes. Some of the most distinctive wedding rings we make combine hand engraved patterns with diamond set shoulders, milgrain borders, or contrasting metal finishes. We can also combine hand engraving on the outside with laser engraving on the inside of the same ring.
